Got Carter

Emily at Jones Design Company recently posted 3 really good reasons not to get a dog.

She makes a strong argument.

We chose to ignore her.

Poor chap needs a little more meat on his bones.

Poor chap needs a little more meat on his bones.

Say hello to Carter…the newest addition to our family.

He’s a 13 month old Golden Retriever.  He is sooooooooooooo well behaved.  He has basic commands but it rubbish on the lead (hence the Halti) but that is down to lack of practice which will soon be resolved.

We brought him home from the rescue centre on Tuesday night and already he is part of the family. We are almost a cliché!  Stay-at-home mum, two kids (one of each) and a Golden Retriever.  We are the poster family for village life!

And yes, my floors are a mess.  But I really don’t mind.  He is a joy and we are all so happy to have him home.

Have fun with him. Ours is a rescue dog, but it’s not a route I’d go down again. If he’d hadn’t have been desperate for a home, he wouldn’t have come, lol. I’m just not a doggie person, just a sucker for a sob story

    • We’ve been wanting a doggy friend for quite some time (the kids have been particularly persistent) but have been waiting for the right dog (no Archie scenarios again, thank you!) It was love at first sight but it’s always a concern bringing a new dog into the house, especially with the kids.
We are so lucky…he has a marvellous temperament and is keen to learn the stuff that he doesn’t know yet.

  3. Awww what a handsome chap. Glad that you and him have adjusted to family life together so quickly. Walking to heel is just patience… he’s still a pup and everything is new and exciting.
I’ve grown up with dogs but unfortunately due to a full time job with a long commute, we can’t have one at the moment.

    • He is soooooooo handsome. And he’s fit right in. He’s with us because his first owner was an elderly gentleman who couldn’t give him the exercise he needs, and Carter then went to the gents daughter who works full time. So he’s not had the practice, and, as you say, he’s still just a big baby. He is taking to it, though, so I don’t think it will be long.

  4. Oh I’m sooo glad you got Carter! (But you know I think you need 2 dogs to make life easier!). Both ours are rescue dogs (but we got them as pups), he will bring so much laughter and joy to your already happy family. All you need now is that Morris Traveller to load up with children, husband, dog and picnic 🙂

    • I was just saying that to The Husband. A Traveller is the perfect car for our family! 😉 And last night we were mulling over a second dog. We shall see. And we’ll be keeping in touch with the rescue centre…just in case! 😀

That is such a cute dog! Looks like he found the perfect home

So glad for you! My boys are adoring having a dog and yours will too!

He is gorgeous, and I’m sure will bring so much joy to all of you. We’ve had our first dog for 3months, and she has made such a difference to our lives. All good!

  8. K-Line says:

OMG – GORGEOUS! Yet another gorgeous family member. I can’t decide which of you is the cutest. And these dogs are lovely. My love for dogs is at odds with my inability to manage any more life responsibility than I currently have, but I do love retrievers of all types.

    • I’m way down the cute scale in this house…completely outnumbered!
I’m so lucky to be at home for all these guys. If I worked we wouldn’t be able to have him…it would be so unfair.

      • K-Line says:

That’s NOT true! And you do work (though I know what you’re saying). Now you’ll work that much harder 🙂

        • I do have some significant competition on the cute side of things. I’ve got to tell you I’m discovering muscles I didn’t know I had, and we’re having to do little walks at the moment to get him fit. Best personal trainer in the world! 😀

    He is precious…

  10. Mrs. Smith says:

Awww! He’s a cute little guy. Her reason #2 is the exact reason we don’t have a dog…My kids have begged and begged but we’re away from home about 12-13 hours most weekdays. I keep telling them it wouldn’t be fair to the dog! Maybe one day I’ll get a little puppy boy 🙂

    • It’s so unfair to leave them so I really applaud your decision. It must be so hard with the little faces pleading. My two have been shameless! I do hope your “one day” comes sooner rather than later!

  11. Awww He is gorgeous, as is your little girl – love that pic. We just got ourselves a puppy, girly cocker spaniel – totally loved up! Whoever said diamonds are a girls best friend never owned a dog!

  12. Linda says:

I once had a Golden Retriever called Max. They are the best family dogs ever as they are enthusiastic, inquisitive and sooooo loving! The downside? Well, if you have a coffee table, get rid of it because that tail with just clear it overtime he’s happy, and that’s pretty much all the time! Plus the hair although the birds love it. Congratulations on your new addition x

    • Thank you! We would have called him Max if we could. He so looks like a Max!
Thankfully we don’t have a coffee table…he does have a very waggy tail. And he has so much joie de vivre. It’s marvellous. I’m used to the hair though…Charlie was very woolly. It’s a small price to pay for so much fun.

  13. Congratulations! Your new addition to the family is such a cutie 🙂

  14. Andrea says:

He’s super cute and how great that your kids (and the adults as well) get to grow up with a dog. Fun days ahead for sure!

    • They have so missed Charlie and they are loving having a dog again. Having grown up with a dog and having had such fun with him, I really can’t imagine them missing out.

  15. Martina says:

Awh he’s adorable – I’ve a little cocker spaniel myself and my life wouldn’t be hte same without him

  16. Michelle says:

OH! He’s so handsome! I’m sure he’ll chunk-up after a few months of solid meals and treats. 😀 Congrats on your new family member!

  17. Susan says:

Thousands upon thousands of reasons having a dog is a wonderful, awesome thing. Welcome, sweet Carter!

  18. Gjeometry says:

Good for you!!!!!!!!!!! ALWAYS ignore people who give you “good” reasons not to get a dog. So thrilled to hear you got him from a shelter, as well. He is just dreamy!

  19. Anne-Marie says:

What a lovely dog! We have a rescue dog, he was slightly aggressive, way to strong for me and had had no training age when we got him aged 15 months.. Scary, and potentially dangerous. He’s now 14 and a lovely dog, thanks to (look away now) neutering and following Ceasar Millan’s training tips – especially using body blocking so that he never walked ahead of me – never let him get out first, go in first, or pass you when you walk him on the lead. That is the best tip I can give any dog owner. A well-behaved dog is a joy to have as a member of the family!
